DIAGNOSTICS

In House Laboratory

At Breton Veterinary Hospital, we have the ability to perform diagnostic bloodwork, urinalysis and stool checks to help diagnose conditions rapidly so treatment can be initiated quickly. An outside laboratory is also available for specialized testing when necessary. Getting laboratory results quickly through our in house equipment can often mean the difference between success and failure of treatment of your pets in critical situations.

Radiology/Endoscopy

Radiographs (X-rays) can be taken in our facility and the quality of our films enhanced by use of our automatic processor to develop radiographs. When specialized imaging is necessary, we have a flexible endoscopes that provides a less invasive way to examine your pet internally to assist in diagnosis and treatment. Here at Breton, we are always ready to satisfy your imaging needs..

PRE-ANESTHETIC TESTING

Pre-anesthetic testing helps us care for your pet. When you place your pet in our hands, you trust us to provide your pet with the best possible medical care. You expect us to provide you with advice, which will allow you to make the best decision for your pet. In order to offer you the peace of mind you deserve, we recommend pre- anesthetic testing prior to placing your pet under anesthesia.

As in human medicine, the anesthetics available for anesthetizing our companion pets are extremely safe. As a result, the anesthetic risk is greatly minimized when a "healthy" pet is placed under anesthesia. However, if your pet is not "healthy," complications can occur both during and after the anesthetic procedure. Therefore, in order to minimize potential risk associated with anesthesia, it is vital for us to know the complete health status of your pet before placing him or her under anesthesia.

Depending on the age and health status of your pet our veterinarians recommend the following tests. Although performing these tests cannot guarantee the absence of complications, it can significantly minimize the risk to your pet and provide you and us with peace of mind.

ANESTHESIA MONITORING

During your pet's surgical procedure your pet will be hooked up to a machine which will monitor their oxygenation, heart rate, respiratory rate and their ECG while under anesthesia.

SURGERY

We are happy to now offer Laser Surgery. Advances in Veterinary medicine and laser surgery, now make Laser use in our surgical procedures available to our clients. We strive to provide the best possible care for your pet and we feel that Laser Surgery provides this care. The main reasons for this are: (1) The Laser seals raw, throbbing nerve endings, significantly reducing post-op pain for your pet. (2) The Laser produces little or no blood loss for your pet, because the Laser seals the small blood vessels. (3) The Laser produces little or no swelling for your pet because the Laser seals the lymphatic. (4) The Laser allows precision in removal of abnormal tissue. (5) The Laser may allow fewer stitches or eliminate sutures completely. (6) The Laser may produce a faster recovery. Laser Surgery can be of special benefit to declaw surgeries, growth removals and even routine procedures such as spaying and neutuering.

During your pet's surgical procedure your pet will be hooked up to a machine that will monitor their oxygenation, heart rate, respitory rate and their ECG while under anesthesia.

We have the capability to perform routine surgery, as well as specialized orthopedic and soft tissue procedures. All surgical patients should have pre-surgical blood screening, urinalysis, and ECG testing as the doctor feels needed for your particular pet based on their age, health status and type of procedure being performed.

DENTAL RADIOLOGY

Breton Veterinary Hospital now offers Dental Radiology and more advanced dental technology to our routine dental cleaning procedures. This new service helps us to determine which teeth are damaged and diseased. Teeth that in the past we would have had to extract.

DENTISTRY

Our dental cleanings are always performed under general anesthesia to ensure a thorough cleaning and to reduce stress on your pet. Ultrasonic scaling, tartar and plaque removal, sub gingival curettage to clean below the gum line where toothbrushes can't go, polishing, oral flushing, dental sealant, and flouride treatment are all included in a dental prophylactic treatment. You will welcome your pets "kisses" with fresh breath and clean mouth that comes from a through dental cleaning!!!

NUTRITION

Your pets health is a major concern many overlook. For this reason, Breton Vet, Hospital carries only the best in nutrition for your loved one. Hills brand foods offer the balanced nutrition for the stages of your pets life. Hills foods are divided into two categories, Science Diets and Prescription Diets.

Science Diets are nutritionally balanced diets which are catered to your cat or dogs changing nutritional needs. Science Diet comes in a variety of stages. Kitten and Puppy growth for the growing youngsters. Science Diet foods take into consideration the size of your puppy and the increased need for nutrition and have available a Large Breed puppy growth (for dogs with an adult weight over 55 lb..) As your cat or dog matures, their nutritional needs shift and that is why Hills makes Science Diet Adult Maintenance. These foods are designed for Dogs and Cats over I year of age and younger than 6 years of age. During these years some pets may need help in controlling their body weight and in order to keep them healthy, Hills has produced Light formulas and Active formulas. The Light Maintenance is designed to let your pet eat a healthy amount of food but with less calories, instead of depriving your pet of the quantity with most diets. Active formula is the exact opposite, With some active Dogs they are eating plenty of food and just not keeping weight on, so Hills has come up with a formula allowing your Dog to eat a normal quantity and have the extra calories they need to keep them healthy. Any cat owner, I am sure, has had or does have a problem with HAIRBALLS... Hills has taken this into consideration and has now come out with Feline Maintenance Hairball Control. As your pet grows and matures (over 6 years of age), your pets nutritional needs change. For this reason Hills has designed Senior formulas of food.

As many of you pet lovers know, sometimes a few pets require special diets to
help minimize the effects of illnesses and health problems. This is why Hills has come out with Prescription Diets. These diets are designed with your pets health problem in mind. There are diets which are designed to keep your cat or dogs urinary tract health and unobstructed. There are diets designed to be mild on your pets stomach and intestinal tract after serious illness or injury. Does your pet have kidney disease? Talk to your Veterinarian about K/D. Does your pet have bad breath? Is brushing your pets teeth impossible? Try T/D.. (Tartar control diet) Ask your Vet about your pets nutritional needs. (Prescription Diets require a DR's prescription, and an annual physical exam to be dispensed ).

Hills takes great pride in your pets nutritional health. That is why these foods are available in both can*and dry *, Along with varying flavors in some forms of the Science Diet foods. Stop by your Veterinarian today to talk about your pets nutritional health.
